Robin Brookes is a member of Anti Copying in Design.
He has vigorously challenged copying of his designs in the past and will continue to protect his intellectual property in the future.
Copying is theft. It undermines and blocks innovation. Copies are often poor quality and not as fully functional as the original design.

The 'MANHATTAN' CD RACK by Robin Brookes
|
 |
Is this just another CD rack?
Is it mood lighting?
Is it recycled sculpture?
Robin Brookes makes a limited number of useful objet d'arts in his workshop using recycled and reclaimed materials. They are hand built very much in the art/craft studio tradition - indeed there isn't any other way of doing it. Therefore they are works of art which are inherently useful.
The Manhattan CD rack is hand made from recycled plastic sheet material made from water dispenser bottles and shredded pirate CDs. It is then fitted with a switchable backlight of low energy flourescent tubes.
The rack holds your favourite 60 compact discs in their jewel boxes in an elegant balance of light and form. |

Sustainable products are those where the designer has thought about their whole life cycle, from the raw material to the end of life. This might be a continuous cycle. the material being melted down again to remake the products. It might be interconnected cycles where the more durable parts are removed and installed in a new product. Or the material might be composted or used as fuel - eventually returning to the earth.
We should also extend that life cycle - making products which last and can be repaired. It is also important that these products are made in such a way that they are easy to dismantle for recycling
The environmental cost of extracting and processing the materials is also important. How much CO2 is released due to these processes and transportation? Are toxic substances released into the environment? |
| All these considerations were made when developing this product. The workshop methods used to make it are fairly low energy, with half the manufacturing time spent using hand processes. The recycled (predominately polycarbonate) material can itself be recycled many times. The lighting set is easily removed. But in any case this product should last a very long time. |

Robin is working on other designs which will appear on this site as they reach fruition.
